Transfer Gantry and Cathode Transfer Crane at EGA's
Fives successfully has started-up its equipment supplied to EGA Jebel Ali Operations in Dubai.
Mid-February 2015, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) awarded Fives ECL a turnkey contract for the supply of a new Transfer Gantry and the refurbishment of a Cathode Transfer Crane. The order was awarded in the framework of a global modernization project of Potlines 1 to 3 at EGA subsidiary Dubai Aluminium (DUBAL, also known as EGA Jebel Ali Operations), which entails the upgrade of D18 pot technology to D18+.
Highly critical for the replacement pots’ start-up, the contract had to be executed in fast track mode. The Transfer Gantry was designed and commissioned in 6 months, whereas a standard execution time varies from 8 to 10 months. Furthermore, being a brownfield project with difficulties foreseen during the installation phase in an operating smelter, all construction activities and pre-operational verifications were conducted off-site in the workshops of our contractor. Then the two pre-assembled gantries were delivered at night between 13 and 14 August, 2015, as an oversized convoy. On site, a 250-tonne crane hired by the contractor, combined with dedicated lifting beams specifically designed for installation purposes, allowed a quick and safe installation in one day. It took just 5 days to start and commission the equipment on site.
With regards to the Cathode Transfer Crane refurbishment, the aim was to replace the lifting mechanism part of a crane supplied by ECL in 1981. The crane was ready to operate on time for the contractual milestone of 3 July, 2015.
EGA expressed utmost satisfaction on the contract execution, which allowed the pot replacement activities to start as per schedule.
