Start-up of Fives installations in india

During November 2013 to March 2014, Fives successfully started-up the equipment supplied to Hindalco and Vedanta in India.

Hindalco' smelters are in operation

At the end of 2013, the Green Anode Plant at Hindalco's Mahan smelter produced the first good anode and the Firing & Control System was started on the Anode Baking Furnace.

Two months later, Hindalco's Aditya smelter was commissioned; the first good anode was produced at the Green Anode plant, followed by the start-up of the Firing & Control System on the first Anode Baking furnace.

The contracts with Hindalco, for its Mahan and Aditya sites respectively located in Madhya Pradesh State and in Orissa State, consisted of:

  • Two Green Anode Plants on a turnkey basis, both equipped with Rhodax® for dry material preparation, IMC® (Intensive Mixing Cascade) for paste mixing and cooling, as well as with Xelios for anode forming. When operating at full capacity, the Mahan Green Anode Plant will produce 35 tons of anodes per hour. The Aditya plant will operate at a higher capacity of 52 tons per hour.
  • Anode Baking Furnace Firing & Control Systems; for the Mahan smelter this plant includes one furnace with 4 fire groups and for Aditya there is one furnace with 4 fire groups. Also included in the Aditya scope of supply is a furnace with 2 fire groups intended to the Hirakud smelter.
The Firing & Control systems for both projects include a control system with safety PLCs (Rockwell technology), implementing Wifi communication and CO module for combustion monitoring, specially developed by Fives.

Executed in parallel with the above projects; In the beginning of 2014 Fives started its first Gas Treatment Center as well as the Firing & Control System on the first Anode Baking Furnace supplied to Vedanta for its Balco smelter located in Korba (Chhattisgarh State).

This contract consisted of the turnkey supply of:

  • Two Gas Treatment Centers to treat gases coming from 336 electrolysis pots. The second Gas Treatment Center should be completed by the end of August, 2014, and the start-up is forecast by the end of the year.

  • The Firing & Control System for two furnaces with GAMI technology are equipped with 2 fire groups each. It includes a total of 40 ramps.

Fives has already supplied the Firing & Control Systems to Vedanta for Balco phase 1 in 2003 and for Vedanta Jharsuguda phases 1 & 2 in 2006.

These contracts were carried out in collaboration with Fives India, the Group‘s engineering subsidiary located in Chennai. A large part of equipment was fabricated locally and the start-up was supervised by the Fives’ team.
