Construction activities are on track at Alba
Between the end of 2016 and April 2017, Aluminium Barhain B.S.C. (Alba) awarded Fives with three orders for the supply of a 55 t/h Green Anode Plant, two Gas Treatment Centres (GTC) and 12 Pot Tending Machines (PTM).
In order to overcome the construction constraints related to the co-activity in an operating plant, a major part of the components had to be pre-assembled in dedicated areas outside the Project site.
- Tool Trolleys for the PTM, which are equipped with the new VISIO+ operator cabin, have been manufactured and tested in the Fives’s workshops in France, before being shipped to Bahrain. In mid-April, the first two PTMs were completely pre-assembled in one of the Fives’ assembly yards close to the Alba site. The first PTM was transfered to Alba site at night by Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) on April 19, 2018; the second one on April 23, 2018. The other 10 PTM are being assembled, pre-tested to be delivered to site by December 11, 2018. This is the first time that Fives delivers completely pre-assembled PTM. A major challenge combined with the delivery of the first machine in less than 9 months.
- All the 18 pre-assembled filter casings of GTC 1 (Northern Courtyard) have been set on the structure. These casings which were manufactured in sections in the United Arab Emirates then pre-assembled on a second Fives yard next to the Alba site, were also transfered by SPMT at night, averaging one per night since late March 2018. Other large platework components are being assembled in a third Fives’ yard. The major challenge is now to coordinate the construction works inside a congested area, where the potroom building erection and civil works by other contractors are still ongoing.
- All equipment were delivered for the Green Anode Plant and civil works are completed. Structural steel and platework erection are about to be completed while mechanical and electrical works are still ongoing. Piping is being preassembled in external yards. Coordination of on-site activities is particularly complex in this area as works are being carried-out in and around an operating anode plant.
This project is requiring diligent coordination of all construction activities on site between the various parties involved to meet the Project deadline.
